The 50 made it to Crewe where 37676 worked the train forward. This was the first time that a Western Diesel had worked to Plymouth on a passenger train in 25 years!! Highlight were: The Devon banks; Dainton, Hemerdon and Whiteball (partially in Somerset) First run of a Western from Birmingham New Street in 25 years High speed running (90 mph) especially on the return with a non stop run from Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads. An on time arrival back at Crewe. Motive power was as follows: 47744 Crewe to Birmingham New Street D1015 Birmingham New Street to Plymouth Friary (via Worcester, Bath, Westbury) 09017 Plymouth Friary to Plymouth station (ensuring that D1015 was at the same end of the train throughout the tour! The train consisted of an ex- Southern region EMU acting as a DVT a few test coaches and 37685 on the back (or front depending on the direction of travel!) ]]> Sun Jun 16 2002 37421 on additional train to Aberystwyth. 22nd July 2002. http://nedchester.fotopic.net/c1539943.html On 22nd July Wales and Borders trains ran an additional train from Wolverhampton to Aberystwyth due to the large number of people travelling to Aberystwyth in connection with a Jewish convention happening there. The train was loco hauled on booked for a class 37 and 8 coaches. The train 1Z37 1511 Wolverhampton to Aberystwyth also brought the opportunity of bringing a class 37 back to the Cambrian line and Aberystwyth for the first time in 11 years. A repeat of this is planned (in the other direction) for August 5th 2002 when the train will run as 1Z36 12:10 Aberystwyth - Wolverhampton. ]]> Mon Jul 22 2002 Trip to Appleby (Pete's 40th Birthday) http://nedchester.fotopic.net/c1539597.html A trip was arranged on June 5th using the 'new' York to Carlisle class 37 hauled service; this being the 0906 York to Carlisle and the 1530 Carlisle to Leeds. Both these trains are top and tail class 37's. We decided to go to to Appleby for a drink and only realised a few days before that it was 'Appleby Horse Fair'! Monday 7 June 2004: A trip was arranged on June 5th using the 'new' York to Carlisle class 37 hauled service; this being the 0906 York to Carlisle and the 1530 Carlisle to Leeds. ]]> Mon Jun 7 2004 Green Express tour Moston to Edinburgh http://nedchester.fotopic.net/c1539580.html On Thursday 1st August I received a message that Green Express Railtours were to use 2 EWS class 37's on their tour from Moston (just outside Manchester) to Edinburgh. The train was routed via Hebden Bridge, Wakefield, Settle and Carlisle then up Beattock to Edinburgh. The return was routed via the ECML to York then back across the Calder Valley back to Moston. Quite an epic tour - in fact 546.5 miles in total! After getting a taxi from Manchester Piccadilly (only costs £3 at weekends!) to Moston we waited for the train along with a few other 'normal' passengers and other enthusiasts who had got wind that the tour was to be hauled by a pair of 37's due to non availability of the booked Fragonset class 31's. Finally thanks to Green Express for being so accommodating. Whilst the on train staff were a little concerned over the possible bad behaviour of some enthusiasts there was no such occurrence (the 'normal' passengers seemed to be drinking more than the enthusiasts!!) and everybody had a great day and the staff were extremely helpful and informative. For service from the staff I cannot thank them enough. Green Express are an extremely professional outfit and regardless of motive power I would recommend any who fancies a good day out to book on their tours!!!
